About Acid Reflux

How long should you be taking Nexium for acid reflux?

We Answered:

It's a bad idea to stop any medication without checking with your doctor first. Have you thought that the Nexium is the reason you don't have heartburn?

BTW, people are on it for years w/o difficulty.

what are gallstones and how is that different from acid reflux?

We Answered:

cutie-
Gallstones and acid reflux are not the only possibilities. Gallstones form in the bladder. They are of 3 different chemicals or combinations = cholesterol, calcium carbonate, or calcium bilirubinate. The last 2 can be seen on a simple X-ray. Gallbladder attacks usually occur from 15 to 60 minutes after a fatty meal. The pain is felt in the right side of the chest, back, or up into the right shoulder.
Acid reflux happens while the strong stomach acid juice refluxes (flows backwards) from the stomach into the lower esophagus and produces a burning sensation, often after a heavy meal. It's more common in overweight people. Neither gallstones nor reflux are immediately life-threatening though a gallstone getting stuck in the bile duct can be very painful. Both might best be diagnosed by a gastroenterologist (G-I) physician. Keep trying. Some of her feelings may related to a change in life of her female hormones.

What formula is best when you have a gassy baby with possible acid reflux?

We Answered:

I would suggest Enfamil Gentlease. My daughter was very gassy and this formula helped a lot. It is no more expensive than the other brands either. The pediatrician put her on soy for a while but I wasn't crazy about that (it stinks plus I read some controversial articles on soy formula being linked to ADD... don't take my word for that though... research it if you think Soy would be best of your baby). After we tried the soy I put her back on regular formula and the gas and spitting up only came back. That's when my mom happened upon the Enfamil Gentlease. We were traveling and ran out of formula. The first store we could find didn't have the regular Enfamil so we gave that a try. It worked wonders for her! I kept her on that until she was 11 months then I switched to the Next Step Lipil for a month or so and now she's on whole milk with no problems.

How long does it take for acid reflux to go away?

We Answered:

I hope your doctor suggested diet changes as well as medication. Avoid anything spicy, deep fried, caffeine, chocolate, peppermint, orange juice, pineapple juice, and tomato sauces. Also try eating smaller meals so you don't distend or stretch your stomach out too much at one time. Don't lay down right after eating and try sleeping with your upper body slightly elevated. If you smoke, quit and avoid alcohol.
In regard to the Prevacid some people take it for many years. You can be on the medication for long term therapy. Generally four to six weeks are needed to have the full effect of the medication. At your follow up if your symptoms are not completely resolved ask about increasing the dosing or frequency of the Prevacid and possibly a referral to a GI or gastroenterologist.
