Acid Reflux Cough

Terry Said:

why does acid reflux make you cough?

We Answered:

Yes, acid reflux can make you cough - not exactly certain why. You might want to start with an over -the-counter medicine like Gaviscon, but if that doesn't help, see a doctor because it can cause esophugus erosion. I think you cough because the body is trying to rid the acid from the esophohus area.

Also, eatting a healthier diet and smaller meals -more freuently too.

Anyone have experience with acid reflux cough with a baby?

We Answered:

I know what ya mean. Mine was a preemie, but around 3 months she got acid refulx. She coughed a lot. It's actually a major symptom. She also cried a whole bunch because the refulx was hurting her. We took her to the pedi once and he said just watch it. came back and he did a test on her where she couldn't eat for 4 hours straight and then she had to drink barium and have a scan xray thing on her to check for reflux-- she had it.

It's called a barium swallow. They poo thick whit stuff when its over. there is minimum risk involoved. You're child is essentially drinking barium. It's a metal compound. It can be seen on the screen of an x ray is why they do it. I hated not getting to let her eat... I fed her right at the 4 hour mark before we had to stop and fed her as much as she would take which wasn't much at 3 a.m. It was heartbreaking and she hated the entire thing. Poor girl. She also had jaundice as a newborn and had to get stuck in the heel literally 20 times and they tried to put her in a bili suitcase but she screamed bloody murder and it traumatized her... we drove 200 miles to get an alternate light. the bili blanket and it took 3 weeks to clear up.

Anyways, we had to give her that medicine for 2 months then I just gradually stopped to see if it was still bad and it just diappeared. She had small bouts of it for a few months after ward but it was much better. and now she is 14 months old and on a solid diet and its non existant. she got a cold here while back and it became prominent again but went away.

Good luck

Is reoccurring sore throat and cough a sign of acid reflux?

We Answered:

well he should have done an endoscopy to rule out GERDS if its not. if it is he needs to put you on some kind of medication. coughing is a symptom but that also is a symptom of asthma which is induced by GERDS. believe it or not GERDS is a condition that should be treated properly. bc it can cause damage in the long run. so he needs to start running some tests and stop with the princess **** some DRs do bc theyre lazy. GERDS can come and go depending on foods you eat also....smoking will worsen it as well as acidic foods and eating before bed. i had to stop smoking bc of our lovely friend acid reflux i have asthma bc i wasnt taking proper care of myself. also sleeping on your left side and elevating your head will help if you have bad heartburn. idk i hope this info helped

doc thinks i have acid reflux cough -- anybody else have this?

We Answered:

Hi! I had GERD (gastric reflux disease) and never had "heartburn"! I'm thin and don't eat a lot--just enough. But I always had a dry, non-productive cough. I ended up in the hospital last year with respiratory distress and they Dx'd me with GERD and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). They vacummed my lungs out!! Lots of old pflemm sp? Prednisone and Protonix (which caused me to lose my memory!); but my pulmonologist gave me the KEY--he said to get a cinder block under my bed and sleep on an INCLINE! I found the 4" did worked perfectly for me!! ALSO, I took antacid tablets after a meal and at nights until I was doing well. No more coughing, clearing my throat, colds etc. etc. He said that relfux was occuring during the night, "back-washing" back up my esophogus and leaking into my lungs!! The INCLINE stopped it ALL!! Once the infection and the lungs were cleared out!! It's HEAVEN to breathe freely again!!!!
Good luck!

Ever heard that acid reflux can give a person a productive cough?

We Answered:

acid reflux can cause irritation in the sinuses and bronchials. This irritation can in turn lead to increased mucus production. A cough is the body's natural defense against mucus in the bronchials and lungs. (GERD can cause asthma flares and sinus infections)

My sons sinus infections and asthma were very difficult to control until they ran the test for GERD and started treatment for control of his GERD.

Is there a natural remedy to stop a cough due to acid reflux?

Increase the amount of raw vegetables you consume, eliminate processed foods from your diet, and take licorice capsules.
