drink more water.. if u drink sufficient amounts of water, it will neutrailize the acid.
try not to eat oily or spicy food. or citrusy fruits.. (bananas are acidic as well. i didnt know this untill recently)
i noticed when i eat to much sugar i get acid reflux as well, so maybe try to limit ur sugar intake

Yes indeed, have you had your vocal cords checked? The acid reflux can cause Leukoplaque on the vocal cords. And if the cough has gone on for some time you really need to see a pulmonary Physician.
The cough(This is called a productive cough when sputum comes up) can go from clear to yellow and green sputum.
Raise the head of your bed on bricks or cement blocks, Prilosec is now over the counter and has almost the same ingredients as Nexium and a lot cheaper also. Try not to eat at least four hours before bedtime. Never eat and just go to bed. Sometimes the reflux does not burn and just comes up in your mouth, sometimes it burns like the devil and comes up in your mouth and your nose. I had a girl friend who had been going to local doctors in two hospitals, they just said she had an Allergy or inflamation, they put her on Abuterol, and nebulizers, steroids, she had a productive cough for two years, finally her voice dropped from being hoarse to a whisper. And she had to carry a jar around to spit the mucus in. Finally I talked her into going to Cleveland Clinic, and they ran a tube with light down her throat and discovered the Leukoplaque on one side of the vocal cords, the surgeon removed it. She was a country and Western singer in a medium size town, and now she speaks in a normal voice and is starting to get her singing voice back.
When acid comes up from the stomach, it burns,and your reflex action tries to get it out of the esophagus and throat, and you cough.
This can be serious, as Leukoplaque sometime is precancerous.

I had the same thing growing up as a kid and it always made me sick I was under any stress where I'd wake up every morning and puke. I know it's not fun... the doctor gave me prilosec (spelling?) and it helped a LOT. You really should go to a doctor and get an upper and lower GI done to see what's going on.

Yes... Bulimia erodes the esophageal epithelium by repeated exposure to stomach acids, greatly increasing the risk of cancer.

Dealing with a depressive partner is not easy at all. I really feel for you.
I think you can do 2 things. First, learn what TO SAY and NOT TO SAY to a depressive person. Read this short and simple article. It is a great help!
